Looking for a good way to extend your t-shirt or add a cute lace hem, this DIY Lace Edged T-Shirt is just what you need. This t-shirt is the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe, you can use an old t-shirt that you have and turn it into a super cute way to layer for cooler weather. You’ve probably seen this look all over Pinterest, so why not make your own? It’s super easy! Let’s get started!
SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED:
- T-Shirt
- Lace with pretty edge (at least 1 yard with pretty edges on both sides)
- Scissors
- Pins
- Tape measure
- Sewing Machine
I recommend that you find a very soft lace fabric, this will lay the nicest. If your lace is too stiff it will stick out like a tutu.
step 1
Trim off the bottom of your t-shirt, depending on how long your t-shirt is.
step 2
Measure how long you want your lace to be.
Cut your lace, keeping the pretty hem all the way across.
step 3
I bought one yard of my lace fabric, since it has a pretty edge on both selvedges I used both sides and sewed them together to make my lace long enough to go all the way around.
step 4
Sewing gathers:
Using your sewing machine, sew a long running stitch all the way across the cut edge. (My mother always told me to make 2 lines of stitching in case one breaks when you’re pulling your gathers.) It’s actually a very good tip! Measure twice cut once, right?
step 5
Fold and pin a hem in the bottom of your t-shirt.
step 6
Once your lace is gathered, spread it evenly along the pinned hem of your t-shirt.
I recommend that you don’t gather it too much, unless you want a tutu, LOL.
Pin your lace to your t-shirt.
step 7
Using your sewing machine, sew your lace to your t-shirt.
This can also be done by hand, I actually had to sew mine by hand since my sewing machine decided to try to eat my t-shirt every time I tried to sew the lace to it. If you do have to sew it don’t feel bad the sewing machine wasn’t invented until around the mid 1800’s, so imagine, some of the most beautiful and ornate clothing in history was sewn by hand!
Whenever we take photos for my projects it’s always a family affair. My daughter is getting quite good at taking pictures, it’s always fun to see her perspective on photography and even the projects. I’m so proud of her!
How will you rock your lace hem? Leave me a comment and let me know!
Enjoy the long weekend!
Great! Simple and beautiful
Thank you! I’m just wanting to sew a 1″ strip of soft lace along the bottom edge of my T-shirt. Do I have to cut the hem off the bottom of the shirt before sewing on the lace or can I leave the hem and just sew right over the top of it? I’m also wanting to sew the same lace along the neckline of the T-shirt as well. Can you please tell me the best way to do this? The lace is very soft and stretchy.
Thank you for your help!
