LAKE PLACID

Happy New Year! Over the holidays I went with my family to Lake Placid, New York for skiing, playing in the snow and a beautiful getaway.

My Holiday Getaway to Lake Placid NY

I’ve always thought of myself as more of a beach person (and I am) but I really fell in love with the mountains at Lake Placid. Nestled in the Adirondack mountains about 5 and a half hours north of NYC, you really feel like you’ve gotten away from it all.Paul Smith's College VIC Cross Country Skiing

Just in case you didn’t know, Lake Placid is the only city in the US to host the Winter Olympics twice once in 1932 and once in 1980 and It was the first winter resort in the US with it’s popularity soaring in the late 1800’s.Olympic Center at Lake Placid

In the center of the town of Lake Placid there is Mirror Lake which was completely frozen and covered with snow when we were there. You could see people cross country skiing and walking across it, even dog sledding! This picture was taken standing in the middle of the lake.Dog Sledding on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid

We had so much fun! My daughter learned to ski at Whiteface one of the mountain resorts nearby. I hate to admit but she did much better than me!Skiing at Whiteface Mountain

So, I don’t think I’ll be quitting DIY blogging for my speed skating career anytime soon!Speed Skating Rink at Lake Placid

About 40 minutes north of Lake Placid is Paul Smith’s College and VIC, where you can go cross country skiing or snowshoeing. It was truly breathtaking! My husband and I are trying to plan a trip back before the season’s over. At the very least I want to go back in the summer I’m sure the hiking is amazing!Paul Smith's College VICPaul Smith's College VIC Bridge

The day we left, we woke up to -15 Fahrenheit! (That’s -26 Celsius!) It’s the kind of cold that makes you feel like you’re breathing in ice through your nose! Although it did make returning to northern New Jersey and 10 degrees not feel quite so bad.Freezing Weather at Lake Placid

I don’t know about you, but I can only handle a city for so long before I need to immerse myself in nature. By the end of 2013 I found myself a bit burnt out, escaping to the mountains was just what I needed.

I just had to share this pic again! It’s so beautiful!Paul Smith's College VIC
