Gothic Choker DIY

Of all the statement necklaces out there one type has had the staying power of over a century. Surprisingly easy to make, a Gothic Choker in lace creates a fabulous statement you can dress up or down depending on your mood.

You can make this necklace with most any type of lace and as you can see in this tutorial it’s easy to cut your lace into the shape you want. Don’t feel like you have to use it exactly as it is. I’ve found some lace has hidden patterns and designs that are really beautiful.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Crochet lace trim
  • Ribbon – for tie closure
  • Needle & thread
  • Brooch (optional)

step 1
Cut your lace to a length that will fit snugly around your neck with at least a 1 inch gap.

Trim around your lace to create the design you want.

step 2
Sew your ribbon to each side of your lace, leaving long enough tails on your ribbon to tie in a bow.

step 3
If you want a little sparkle add a rhinestone brooch.

You can also wear it with or without a brooch. When I made this necklace a few years ago, I felt the brooch added something to it, with the Gothic Choker trend right now for fall made popular by Alexander McQueen, it seems more relevant without the rhinestone brooch. Feel free to extend the lace and attach it to your bra a la McQueen. It really does make a beautiful statement.Gothic Choker DIY inspired by Alexander McQueen Fall 2015

I decided to repost this project because it’s so perfect for the current fashion trend and Halloween. To see the original post click here.

Wouldn’t this also be beautiful in white for a wedding? I think it could be really stunning!

How will you make your necklace? Do you like this Gothic trend for fall? Leave me a comment and let me know.

  1. Great post – thank you! Do you recommend starch for the wider/larger pieces?

    • I know my mom used to use a white glue and water solution painted on her crocheted pieces as a stiffener :) It seemed to hold better than starch and it was non toxic children’s school glue.
