Here’s a simple DIY project to get your week started and jump into fall fashion. This Dip Dye Plaid Shirt DIY tutorial is a great new take on a classic and a great layering piece for later.

TOOLS & MATERIALS:

  • Plaid shirt
  • Dye
  • Salt
  • 1 Cup Measuring cup
  • Spoon or something to mix with.
  • Gloves
  • Coat hanger

Dip Dye Plaid Shirt Supplies
step 1
Fill up your sink or a bucket with hot water.

Make sure your water is deep enough to dye your shirt as high as you want.

step 2
Put your shirt on a coat hanger to make sure it hangs straight.

TIP: You can pin your sleeves up if you need to, to keep them from getting in the dye.

Before you add your dye, dip your shirt into the water and get the part of your shirt you will be dying wet.

Set (or hang) your shirt somewhere out of the way, while you mix up your dye bath.Dip Dye Plaid Shirt Wet Your Shirt

step 3
Pour the entire packet of dye into your water and mix.

I used a stainless steel spoon, the dye wont stick or dye it. You can also use a wooden spoon if youre going to only use it for dying.

step 4
Add 1 cup of salt to your dye bath and mix.

The salt will help the dye get into the fibers of your shirt and help you to get a stronger color.Dip Dye Plaid Shirt Dye and Salt

step 5
Dip your shirt into your dye bath.

Make sure your shirt can sit in there for about 30 minutes.

I had to hold mine, since I dont have cupboards over the sink in my new kitchen.

The longer your shirt stays in the dye the stronger the color you will get.Dip Dye Plaid Shirt Dip in Dye

Let your shirt sit for about 30 minutes at least.

Mittens couldnt figure out what I was doing. She tries to understand our fascination with water, shell sit in the tub for hours staring at the faucet. She still doesnt get it. LOLDip Dye Plaid Shirt Mittens the Cat

step 6
After your shirt has set in the dye for awhile you can pull it out to check your color.

Squeeze the dyed part of your shirt to dry it a bit to check the color, this will give you a better idea of how your dye will look when its dry.

When your color is as dark as you want it, drain your dye and using hot to warm water, rinse your shirt until the water runs clear.

Let your shirt dry.Dip Dye Plaid Shirt Check Color

step 7 (optional)
If you want, after your shirt is dry you can add beads or rhinestones to your shirt by adding them randomly for a bit of sparkle or in specific places. Its up to you.

I recommend using the Jewel-it glue to add them. This stuff holds up really well even in the washing machine, (but not the dryer).

Just add a drop of glue where your want your bead to be and press your bead into it and let dry.Dip Dye Plaid Shirt Close Up

I didnt add beads to mine, even though that was my initial plan. As much as I love embellishment, at this point my wardrobe is getting a little over bedazzled! LOL I need a few basics to mix in with all my sparkly creations. That and I really did like the simplicity of this simple dip dye.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you make yours!

TOOLS & MATERIALS:

  • 1 Pleated skirt (I bought mine at Uniqlo)
  • Rit dye (I used black)
  • Salt – 1 cup

Dip Dye Pleated Skirt DIY Supplies
step 1
Prepare your area where you will be dying your skirt.

I used a sink, you can also use a large pot or plastic container. Make sure the area all around your sink is clear in case any dye splashes, you dont want to dye everything!

step 2
Fill your sink or large pot with the hottest tap water you can. I filled my sink up about half way.

Pour in your packet of dye and mix well.

Pour in one cup of salt and mix well.

step 3
Find a way to hold just the part you want of your skirt in the sink, you dont want to be holding it with your hands because youll need to leave it there for a couple hours or more.

There is a cupboard with a handle above the sink I used, so I used stacking hangers to give me the length to hold my skirt in place. (Get creative and use what works best for you and your space.)

I put about the bottom 3 inches in my dye bath.DIY Dip Dyed Pleated Skirt Hanging Ideas

step 4
Leave your skirt to sit in the dye bath for a couple hours. Mine actually sat for about 3 hours.

With a dark color like black you want to make sure the dye stays and makes a strong dark color, so the longer you leave it the better.

When in doubt check the directions on the package.DIY Dip Dyed Pleated Skirt DyingDIY Dip Dyed Pleated Skirt Tutorial Photo Close UpDIY Dip Dyed Pleated Skirt Tutorial Photo Back View 2DIY Dip Dyed Pleated Skirt Tutorial Photo

Im such a sucker for a pleated skirt! Maybe I always wanted a school uniform, maybe its the way they can be extra preppy or punk and edgy. Either way I love them and Im sure Ill be wearing them long past the age when I should, if you worry about that stuff!

This DIY is super simple since you dont even have to make your skirt. Dye one you already have or run dont walk to Uniqlo (or go online) these skirts are on sale for $10 right now and the quality is very good! (No lie, and theyre not paying me either! I bought my own skirt!) ;)

The best part about this skirt is that I wont have to put it away when the weather cools. It will be so cute with tights and a sweater this fall! Cute skirt for less than $15!?!? Its awesome!

Be sure to leave me a comment and let me know how your skirt turns out or how youll be wearing it!

A new take on an LBD, but this time its a Resist Dye LONG Black Dress DIY.

Create a sophisticated resist dye on a simple long black dress.

Resist Dye Long Black Dress DIY Feature 2

PUT ON YOUR GLOVES >

Supplies to make your Resist Dye Long Black Dress DIY:

  • 1 Long Black Dress
  • Bleach
  • Tulip brand Tie Dye Kit c/o (I Love To Create)
  • Rit Dye in at least 2 dark colors
  • Salt
  • Rubber gloves

Check out my Amazon shop for links to all supplies.

Resist Dye Long Black Dress DIY Supplies
step 1
Lay your dress out on a non-porous surface where you will be doing your bleaching and dying. I used my bathtub.

When you lay your dress out scrunch it up. I focused on one side.

step 2
Take your bleach and carefully pour it over the scrunched up side of your dress.

It can take awhile for the bleach to take the color out of your black dress. Be patient.

If it doesnt look like the bleach is removing enough of the color you can add some more.

But be careful adding too much bleach, you dont want to burn holes in the fabric.

Once youve bleached your dress to the color you want, rinse it out. Make sure you really get the bleach rinsed out.Resist Dye Long Black Dress DIY Bleaching

step 3
I first used the Tulip Tie Dye kit (the lovely Alexa at I Love To Create sent it to me) to add color to my dress. I really liked the turquoise color but the other colors didn’t turn out exactly as I wanted for this project, I know if I had been working with pure white they would have been perfect.

Follow the instructions for your tie dye bottles, this is a very easy way to dye your fabric. You have a lot more control using the bottles.

Using your bottles squirt your dye where you want it on your dress. You can really target the areas you want.

Let your dye sit and when it’s the color you want rinse it out completely.

step 4
If you want a more intense color, you can add Rit dye on top of first dyes.
Mix up your first color of your Rit dye.

Use the pot method for your dye, this will make your dye more concentrated.

Boil your water in a large pot. Add your whole packet of dye and if your dress is cotton add 1 cup of salt. Mix well.

step 4
Carefully pour your dye over part of your bleached out dress.

Keep your pot as close to your dress as possible when you do this to prevent splashing. Otherwise youll be covered in dye too.

Let the color sit.

If you have any color left over, dont throw it out, if you need more color later you can always add it.

step 5
While your first color is sitting on your dress, mix up your second color of dye.
Repeat step 3.

step 6
Leave your first color on your dress while you add your second color.

Dont put your second color right on top of your first color. Its ok to let them overlap, but if your put one on top of the other your colors will get muddy.

Let both colors sit for a few hours.

Remember that when you rinse your dress your dyed color will lighten, so the longer you let the color sit the darker your final color will be.Resist Dye Long Black Dress DIY Dying Process

step 7
After a couple hours you can test your color, by rinsing a small part of your dress in cold water.

When you like the way your color looks, rinse your dress in cold water and hang to dry or you can wash it in the washing machine on cold, just be sure to follow the instructions on the package and your dress for washing and drying.Resist Dye Long Black Dress DIY

I love the slightly bohemian look this resist dye creates on this simple black dress. When youre dying fabric the mixing of the colors can get quite beautiful, I love to see how the colors combine.

What are your favorite color combinations?
