Happy Tuesday! Today I thought I’d share some of my favorite ways to alter fabric using color with you. There are so many ways to alter fabric each with it’s own unique outcome. I really think it’s amazing how a color change can make a basic fabric look totally unique and fashion forward.
Often we think of tie dye when we think of dying fabric and I think that can turn many people off the idea, but you’d be amazed at the cool colors and patterns you can get with dye, tie dying or otherwise. Dye is also an inexpensive way to alter or upgrade a plain fabric, here are a few of my favorite dying and fabric painting techniques.

Ice Dying: Let the ice do the work for you.

Or, try it with snow here!

Fabric Markers: Release your inner artist and draw right on your fabric.

For more fabric marker ideas try here, and here.

Tie Dying: The granddaddy of dying fabric, but the outcome is up to you depending on how you tie your fabric and the colors you use.

For more tie dye: I love this one, these pants, and this scarf.

I hope these techniques inspire you to play with color and try a new technique. Leave a comment and let me know your favorite!

I love fashion, but when it comes right down to it I’m really a t-shirt and jeans person, that’s what makes this Paris DIY Doodled T-shirt so perfect. This t-shirt is far from basic, with elements taken from doodles and sketches of Parisian icons, it’s a perfect addition to your fall (or even summer) wardrobe. For this DIY I’ve even created a free downloadable design for you to use to make your own.

After seeing the cute doodle t-shirts in J. Crew’s fall line I was inspired to make this project. I don’t know if it was the cheapskate in me or I just really wanted the challenge to see if I could make one myself, but as much as I liked them I couldn’t help but really want to make one. Depending on where you get your t-shirt, you can also make one for way less! Let’s get started.

SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED:

  • T-Shirt
  • Fabric markers
  • Paris doodle – Download HERE
  • Tape
  • Paintbrush (optional)
  • Water (optional)

step 1

Download the Paris doodle design here, or design your own.

To make it the original size 9” wide, you’ll need to print it out on 2 sheets (unless you can print tabloid size). If you print it out on two sheets, just trim and tape it together.

step 2

Slide your design inside your t-shirt.

A rule of thumb is to start your design about 2” down from the neck.

Check your sides and make sure your design is centered.

When you have it where you want it, tape it inside your t-shirt to keep it from moving.

step 3

Before you start tracing your design, play around with your colors and try using a paintbrush and water with your fabric markers. Use a scrap of t-shirt fabric or something similar.

DIY Paris Doodle T-Shirt Testing by Trinkets in Bloom

Fabric markers often write darker than they look, they also look very different after adding water.

Work on small areas at a time and add the water before the ink dries, to use this watercolor method.

Once you get the hang of how it works go ahead and start on your t-shirt, do the colors first.

step 4

After you’ve added all your colors, go back in and add the outlines.

Have fun with this and make it sketchy, remember it’s supposed to look like a doodle, it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Create a cute and simple 4th of July T-Shirt, perfect for a backyard BBQ or the beach this 4th!

4th of July T-Shirt feature by Trinkets in Bloom

Rather late but as promised this is the 2nd runner up for the 4th of July DIY project. You can see the 1st runner up here.

TOOLS & MATERIALS:

step 1
Cut off the sleeves and the neck of your t-shirt. You can see in the image below how I cut mine.4th of July T-Shirt cutting by Trinkets in Bloom

step 2
I used a ruler to draw my flag onto my shirt. You can also print out an image of the flag and put it inside your shirt and trace it.4th of July T-Shirt drawn by Trinkets in Bloom

step 3
Before you start drawing or painting, I recommend putting a board or heavy paper inside your shirt to keep the ink from bleeding through. If you are just using the fabric markers without water this generally isn’t necessary, but if you’re using water they will bleed through.

step 4
I used sketchy strokes to fill in the areas of my flag,

Work in small areas, use your fabric marker and then brush over it with just water on your brush.4th of July T-Shirt painting by Trinkets in Bloom

As you work the water will cause the fabric marker to bleed out a bit. This actually bleed out a bit more than I wanted it to, so I recommend going easy on the water.4th of July T-Shirt stars by Trinkets in Bloom

step 5
As your shirt is drying you can go back in and sketch more with your fabric markers. I did this to give it more of a sketchy look and to darken my colors.4th of July T-Shirt sketching by Trinkets in Bloom4th of July T-Shirt flag detail by Trinkets in Bloom

step 6
When you’re finished with your design let it dry completely before wearing.4th of July T-Shirt finished by Trinkets in Bloom

Tie your shoulder straps together.

I have to admit that I’m on the fence about this project and I’m not as happy about how it turned out as I was hoping. Using the fabric markers with water is something that I’ve done successfully in several other projects and I’ve always been happy with the results. This time I think I got a little heavy with the water and I ended up with a bit of flag mush. Never the less I thought I’d still share it with you. The altered t-shirt design actually came from my friend Anne at Wobisobi, you can see her version here. This style is fun and super easy and it makes a great beach coverup or just a cute tank to wear with shorts.

So chalk this up as a craft fail for the flag, it happens to all of us (that’s why I’m not a food blogger!) This is still a fun way to alter a tee and using water with the fabric markers can still be really cool, just take the time to try out different techniques and see what works best for you.

I’m still thinking that I may over dye the whole shirt with a gray and then go back in with bleach, what do you think?

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!!!!
xoxo
Cathy

The best part about these fabric markers is that as long as they are wet you can manipulate them with water, but once they dry they are set. You can wash them and they won’t wash out.Watercolor Ballerina T-Shirt Finished

This spring, patterned and printed sneakers are a great alternative to boring flats. I love how quickly you can create your own by using the fabric markers from Tulip. These markers are so great, they dry quickly and they dont have a strong smell like some other markers. The colors are strong too!
