GET READY TO CROCHET >

Depending on the yarn you use, this DIY crochet necklace can be a nice change from a scarf.

TOOLS & MATERIALS:

  • Yarn
  • Large chain
  • Closure
  • Jump rings
  • Pliers
  • Scissors
  • Large yarn needle
  • Crochet hook

DIY Crochet Necklace Supplies

I was inspired to make this necklace after seeing this photo of a Chanel crocheted necklace for spring in a recent issue of Lucky magazine.DIY Crochet Necklace Inspiration

step 1
Measure your chain around your neck and cut it to the size you want.

I cut mine to 23 inches. The links on my chain are 1 inch long. (40 links)

step 2
I mixed 3 different yarns together to get the thickness and look I wanted.

Start by making the starting loop on your crochet hook.

Single crochet in each chain.

Do NOT do a crochet chain stitch in between single crochets, you want your chain to curl in a bit.

Then you get to the end of your chain, finish by pulling your yarn through the loop on your hook and cut your yarn.DIY Crochet Necklace Row OneDIY Crochet Necklace Row One Finished

step 3
For your second row, start on the same side you started for your first row.

I counted down 8 links in my chain and started by single crocheting in the ninth stitch.

NOTE: Make sure you measure your chain and necklace, if the size of your chain is not the same a mine you will want to measure to make sure this is the right placement for you.

Double crochet in the next stitch.

Chain one.

Skip one stitch and treble crochet in the second stitch from your hook.

Continue chain one, treble crochet in every other stitch across your chain.

When you have 10 stitches left to go, double crochet in the next stitch then single crochet in the stitch after that and finish your row by pulling your yarn through the loop on your hook.

Cut your yarn.DIY Crochet Necklace Row TwoDIY Crochet Necklace Row Two Finished

step 4
Third row, start again on the same side you started before.

Count down 4 stitches fro the end of the chain and single crochet in the fifth stitch.

Double crochet in the next stitch.

Chain one.

Skip one stitch and double crochet in the next stitch.

Continue across your row by chain one, skip one stitch and double crochet in the next stitch.

When you have 6 stitches left on your row double crochet in the next stitch, then single crochet.

Pull your yarn through the loop on your hook and cut your yarn.DIY Crochet Necklace Row Three

step 5
Using your large yarn needle sew in all your loose ends.DIY Crochet Necklace Crochet Finished

step 6
Add your jump rings to the ends of your chain.

Put the closure on one side and make a small chain out of about 6 jump rings on the other side.DIY Crochet Necklace Adding ClosuresDIY Crochet Necklace FinishedDIY Crochet Necklace Close Up

The more I wear this necklace the more I like it. Its a fun change from a scarf, depending on the yarn you use it can be quite warm.

I was so excited to make this necklace that I didnt find the exact yarn I wanted, so you may be seeing a revised version of this necklace very soon. The next one will be a lot less hairy!

Another great thing about this project is how quick it is to make. If you are new to crochet its a good way to learn the three basic stitches. (And youll have something nice to show for it at the end!)

Let me know how your necklace turns out! I love hearing from you!

The weather is still cool (OK downright cold in some places) and this Long Gloves DIY is a chic and simple way to add an extra layer of warmth and don’t forget the video!

Long Gloves DIY Feature

MAKE SOME GLOVES!

Check out the video for detailed instructions and more finished images.

Supplies to make your Long Gloves DIY:

  • The sleeves from a long sleeve t-shirt (find one that the sleeves fit snug)
  • 6 Pearl beads
  • Needle & thread
  • Embroidery thread
  • Fabric glue
  • Aleenes Jewel-it glue – (you can get it here at I Love To Create.)
  • Sewing machine (optional)

Long Gloves DIY Supplies
step 1
Cut the sleeves off of your long sleeve t-shirt about half an inch below armpit.

I used the sleeves from the long sleeve t-shirt I used in this DIY.

step 2
Lay your gloves out on a flat surface and make sure theyre both the same length.

Slide your arm into one of your sleeves. Decide where you want your gloves to end.

I like mine to stop just past the palm of my hand.

Take your pins and mark where you want to make the hole for your thumb.Long Gloves DIY Pin Thumbs

TIP: At this point, if your sleeves are too loose you can turn them inside out and sew along the seam to make them tighter. I used a very tight fitting t-shirt for these sleeves and I didnt need to take them in. It just depends on the t-shirt you use.

step 3
Pin a hem in the tops of your gloves.

I folded mine over about a half inch.

Using your sewing machine, sew all around the top edge of your gloves.

TIP: Since this is such a small hem to sew you can sew it by hand or even use a fabric glue to make your hem.Long Gloves DIY Hem

step 4
Make your thumb holes.

Cut a slit about 1 inch long in your sleeves where you pinned for your thumb. (As you’ll see in the photo below I forgot to take a photo of cutting the thumb hole before I sewed around it. I really apologize for this, but you can see me measuring and cutting the thumb hole in detail in the video.)

Put your hand inside your glove to make sure its big enough. You want your thumb to fit through easily, but you dont want it to be too big.

Take your embroidery thread and a needle and sew a decorative edge around your thumb hole.

I sewed a blanket stitch, you can do any stitch you like for this. You just want to cover the raw edge of your cut.

Using your fabric glue, put a small drop on the raw edges of your thumb holes to hold your embroidery thread and keep your t-shirt from running.Long Gloves DIY Thumb Hole

step 5
Lay your gloves out on a flat surface and measure where you want to place your beads.

I put mine at my wrist right on the seam.

Use your Aleenes Jewel-it glue and put 3 drops about a half inch to 3/4 of an inch apart.

Push your beads into the glue.

Do this for both gloves and let dry.Long Gloves DIY Beads

step 6
The Aleenes Jewel-it glue will hold very well, but if you want to you can also sew your beads on.

Take your needle and thread and sew each bead on to your gloves.

TIP: After about an hour your Jewel-it glue will be dry enough to hold your beads while you sew them on.Long Gloves DIY FinishedLong Gloves DIY PhotoLong Gloves DIY

Inspired by both the recent Chanel Spring Couture show and Downton Abbey these long gloves keep your arms warm and add a bit of sophistication as well.

As promised from Monday’s post here is part 2 using the sleeves from the long sleeve henley from the Mod Black and White T-Shirt DIY.

Even if you don’t make Monday’s DIY, this is a simple and fun way to make a pair of long gloves.

Leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

One of the big trends for fall shoes, is the puritan style (in all heel heights); Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu all have them (enough said). Now you can be on trend and comfortable with this Puritan Ballerina Flats DIY project.

No matter how much you love heels, everyone needs a great pair of flats now and then.

Supplies to make your Puritan Ballerina Flats DIY:

  • 1 Pair ballerina flat shoes (mine are from H & M)
  • 1 Yard of 2” satin ribbon (always get a couple inches extra)
  • 2 Rhinestone buckles (mine are from M & J)
  • Glue – Aleenes Jewel it to glue the buckles to the shoes
  • Hot glue (I ended up using hot glue for everything, I was too excited I couldnt wait for the glue to dry.)
  • Needle & thread
  • Scissors

Puritan Ballerina Flats DIY Supplies
Step 1
Measure across the toe box on your shoes, exactly where you will want your ribbon to go. Then cut 2 pieces of your ribbon to that length, with a little extra (just in case).

Step 2
Lay your cut pieces of ribbon out flat and set your buckle on top, measure where you will make your hole, “to buckle your shoes”. Once youve measured, pierce a hole in your ribbon with your scissors.

Step 3
“Buckle your shoes” by feeding your ribbon through your buckle.

Step 4
Glue your buckles to your shoes. If youre using the Aleenes Jewel-it, youll want to place the jewel-it on to your shoe and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before pressing your buckle into the jewel-it. Then youll need to let it dry for a few hours before continuing.
If youre using hot glue, apply your hot glue directly to the top of your shoe where you will be placing your buckle and press your buckle into it. Hold it until it dries/cools.

Step 5
Once your glue is dry and your buckle is secure, pull your ribbon gently but firmly toward the sole of your shoe. Mark a line, on your ribbon, along the edge where the upper part of the shoe meets the sole. Cut your ribbon along the line where you marked it.Puritan Ballerina Flats How to DIY

Step 6
Using your hot glue, place a line of glue on your shoe along the edge where you want to glue your ribbon to your shoe. Puritan Ballerina Flats DIY Detail

Step 7
Take your remaining ribbon and cut it in half. Take one piece of your ribbon and your needle and thread, fold your edge over about a ¼ inch and stitch it down right along the edge. Then continue making small pleats until you feel your ruffle is wide enough for your shoe. When you get to the end trim your ribbon and fold it over the same as you did at the beginning about a ¼ inch and stitch it down.
Make 2.

Step 8
Attach your ruffles just inside your shoes with your hot glue, be careful not to put too much hot glue or it will squish out and add extra bulk you dont want.Puritan Ballerina Flats DIY RuffleDIY Puritain Ballerina Flats

Im so excited about how these Puritan Ballerina Flats turned out. This was one of those DIYs that just came together, as I was making them. The rich deep blue is just dreamy! I love the sparkle of the rhinestone buckles, and the extra ruffle at the top, these make my feet happy!
I know the original Puritan style was far from embellished or sparkly (in fact Puritans were pretty anti sparkle), but thats the beauty of reinventing a trend. That said, the Puritan style definitely adds a great silhouette to embellish.

There are so many amazing embellishments for fall Im seriously chomping at the bit to jump into fall DIYs…starting now!
Let me know what you think. I love to hear from you!
