This summer has been so hot, and all I want to wear are cool loose dresses, this Off the Shoulder T-Shirt Dress is the perfect solution to stay cool and look great! The best part is it’s super easy to make and not very expensive either. Double yay! Keep reading to make your own!

SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED:

  • Elastic
  • Jumbo ric-rac (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure
  • Safety pin
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine

step 1

Lay your t-shirt out flat and measure where you will cut across the neck.

I measured 4 inches in from the shoulder seam and 2 inches down from the neck.

step 2

You can cut snips into the curve to help make it easier to hem.

step 3

Fold about an ¼ inch over and then ¾ inch to make the casing for your elastic, and pin in place.

step 4

Use your sewing machine to sew your seam.

Be sure to leave about 2 inches open to thread your elastic through.

step 5

Measure your elastic around your shoulders, pull it snug, you don’t want it too loose.

When you cut your elastic be sure to leave about 2 inches extra to overlap and sew together.

step 6

Pin your safety pin into one end of your elastic.

Push your elastic through your neck casing.

step 7

When your elastic is all the way through, sew the two ends together.

Before you sew it make sure to check that your elastic is not twisted, you want it to lay flat.

After you sew it, try your dress on to make sure your elastic is tight enough. When I was making mine I had to go back and tighten it up quite a bit.

step 8

When you’re sure your elastic is tight enough, sew your neck casing closed.

step 9

After my dress was finished I decided I wanted to add a little something to it, so I had some really big jumbo ric rac and I sewed it right along the bottom edge and the sleeves of my dress.

I love mini dresses for summer, and with a loose one like this it’s easy to pair it with shorts underneath, because the last thing you want to worry about are your knickers showing while you’re trying to look oh so fabulous, right?!

I love a white dress for summer, it somehow just seems a little bit cooler than a darker color, however I think this dress would be totally cute in any color and a black one would be perfect to transition into fall, it would look great with leggings and boots, when the weather starts to cool.

  4. I tried the off the shoulder shirt dress but its way too short, did you use a tall mans shirt?

    • Hi Sherri,
I used a 3XL t-shirt. It still is a bit short for me too, I usually wear shorts underneath.

  5. Love it
Will make it for my granny daughters

  6. Thanks for sharing this craft. I love the idea. I wish you chose the background color a little differently on the pictures. Both background and t-shirt being white color is making little harder to see the details.

I love this idea, but I have to wear a bra, so I may use it as a nigtdress, or put some large rick rack to hide straps. But it’s a great idea. Thank you.
    Cheers.
