step 1
If you dont have a pom pom maker, take your card board and cut out 2 circles. I cut my circles 4” in diameter.

Then cut your circles in half and cut small half circles along the edge in the center.

If you have a pom pom maker wrap your yarn varying your colors by wrapping each color in a section before adding the next color.

Keep wrapping your yarn until your pom pom maker is really full.DIY Pom Pom Necklace Pom Pom Making

step 2
When you are finished wrapping your yarn, cut it along the larger outer edge.

Do this for both halves of your circles.

Once your yarn is cut, place your 2 halves together and tie another piece of yarn around your cut yarn for both halves, tying them together.

Tie them very tight.

When your pom pom is tied you can trim any uneven strands of yarn, to make it round.DIY Pom Pom Necklace Pom Pom

step 3
Using your needle and a very long thread, thread 1 of your small beads and then double your thread and tie a knot in the end.

Thread approximately 16 more small beads onto your thread. It will be about 2 inches long.

If you are using really small seed beads you may want to add more.

step 4
Thread 3 of your large beads, then your 3 medium beads and then 3 more of your large beads.DIY Pom Pom Necklace Beading

step 5
Using your small beads string them onto your thread.

I made this section 26 inches long.

step 6
Using your needle and thread, run your thread down through your larger beads and the smaller beads. This will make the loop for your necklace to go over your head.

You can wrap your thread around the small beads to secure it, then sew it into your pom pom going around the strand of yarn you used to tie your pom pom.DIY Pom Pom Necklace Attachment

step 7
Once your beaded necklace is sewn to your pom pom you can add a drop or two of fabric glue to help it to hold.DIY Pom Pom Necklace Close UpDIY Pom Pom Necklace Photo 2

This DIY Pom Pom Necklace was one of those projects that I kept going back and forth wondering if it was a good idea or not. I finally decided that it was a really fun necklace and definitely worth sharing!

It would also make a great gift!

This DIY Pom Pom Necklace has a really retro feel to it but it’s still fun and modern!

I was inspired to make this necklace after looking at the December issue of Lucky magazine and the necklace they featured by Erica Tanov.
