DIY GLITTER SHOES

With so many fun fashion shoes on the runways for Spring, and in so many bright colors I knew what my closet needed was a serious dose of color. This DIY project is a fun and super easy way to bring an ordinary pair of pumps to the next level using only Mod Podge and glitter.

DIY Glitter Shoes

You can make these in the morning and be doing the cha cha by evening!

What youll need to make your DIY Glitter Shoes:

  1. Suede pumps (in your color of choice – mine are from Forever 21)
  2. Mod Podge
  3. Glitter
  4. Bowl
  5. Brushes – 1 big, 1 small
  6. White chalk
  7. Flexible curve – optional it helps with marking your design

DIY Glitter Shoes
Step 1
Decide where you want to put your design. I made some sketches to help me visualize.DIY Glitter Shoes

Step 2
Using your chalk and your flexible curve (optional) carefully mark your design.
Do this for both shoes. When you are marking your second shoe make sure all your designs match from one shoe to the other (unless of course you want them different).
You can also use tape to mark off your design but I find this to be a little messy, because the tape doesnt always keep it from bleeding through and once your Glitter/Mod Podge mixture is dry it tends to be a bit rubbery as in, if you pull on it, it will peel. So, in my opinion its better to go slow and wing it.DIY Glitter Shoes

Step 3
Mix your Mod Podge and glitter in a small bowl. I always do this by an open window. The Mod Podge is a bit stinky.DIY Glitter Shoes

Step 4
Starting with your big brush paint your Glitter/Mod Podge mixture onto your first shoe. I recommend starting in the middle of your design and working toward your edges. You will use your small brush to carefully paint the edges of your design.
DIY Glitter ShoesWhen you are painting the edges you can easily push the mixture back with your nail if it gets out of line. You can also clean it off the shoes easily if you catch it quickly.DIY Glitter Shoes

Step 5
Place your shoes outside if you can or by an open window to dry, they will dry faster this way.
I also recommend you dont throw out your Glitter/Mod Podge mixture yet. As your shoes dry check them for places where the shoe color is showing through and touch them up.DIY Glitter Shoes

Once your shoes are completely dry youre ready to roll. I found the dried Glitter/Mod Podge to be pretty tough too. Of course you still want to treat them with care but enjoy, kick up your heels and add a splash of color to your life with a sparkle!DIY Glitter ShoesAs we were taking this picture it started pouring rain, I’m sure our neighbors must think we’re crazy.

  1. just a quick question. would this work for faux leather shoes as well? i have a worn-out pair of oxford heels that i’d love to refashion, but all the tutorials i have come across so far used suede/faux suede.

    • I don’t see why it wouldn’t work on faux leather too. I’ve used the same glitter/mod podge mixture on glass and it stays on fine.
You could always scuff the faux leather a little with an emery board to give it more texture for the mixture to stick to.
Let me know how they turn out.

        Thanks,
        Juhi

        • Tons of online GOOD glitter (sorry but Joanns isn’t a good glitter supplier, they have okay glitter not the good stuff) there are tons online that sell only glitter…. 4. Hi would this work with anykind of shoe?

    • Hi Brooke,
Mod Podge will stick to most any surface. So yes this should work with most any shoe.

  6. These look amazing! I recently “made” a pair of glitter heels using some old fabric shoes, and this post was super-helpful. I plan on linking back to it when I post on my own blog, if that’s ok :)

  7. Hi,
I love this blog!! So so so helpful! I want to do this to a pair of heels for a hens night in a couple of weeks n not that I’m rough with my shoes but I am going out in them I was just wondering how well it has stuck to ur suede shoes? Has any come off of it?
    Thanks for your help

    • Hi Dani,
It actually stays on pretty well. Once it’s completely dry it’s pretty tough. You still want to be careful, little scuffs wont make it fall off or normal wear. I’ve found them to hold up pretty well.
      xoxo

      • Thanks so much! They have turned out great! Is there anywhere on ur blog that I can post a pic to show u?
And now a couple of other ladies want them for the hens night as well! Xoxo

  8. I just did a pair of stilettos with silver glitter on the entire shoes and they are perfect! I found that once shaking off the loose glitter, cheap hairspray works perfect to hold everything tight in place and prevents leaving a glitter trail behind you as you walk! They look awesome!!

  9. Hello, this is a great tutorial and I am looking forward to trying it but I was wondering how much of the modge podge to glitter ratio do you use?

  10. Hei. i bought an expensive pair of shoes i would love to wear for a friends wedding in a summer.. but they are orange. and the dress is golden… is there a way of making my sued shoes glitter or smth … and than get back to old colour?? please.. help!

    • Hi Erin,
I’ve found that the mod podge holds the glitter on really well. However, if you really rub it or are rough with them then yes it may come off, but with normal wear it stays on very well.

      • Thanks so much for replying! I love the design you created on your shoes, I’m inspired to try my own :)

  11. Hi. My daughter is going to a matric ball. She is wearing a long dress with a silver glitter high hill shoe. The problem she’s having is the dress sticks to the shoe which is a problem when she walks. Can she mod podge the shoe to eleviate this problem?

    • Hi Heather,
I’m not sure the mod podge would help, the glitter is still a little rough. You could try putting a few coats on top of the existing glitter, it may help to smooth it a bit and it will dry clear.
      I hope this helps!
      Thanks!
      xoxo
      Cathy

    • Did you solve this problem? My daughter is wearing shoes with glitter on them to prom. She is wearing a long jersey dress and the shoes stick to it. I am wondering what worked for you?

  12. Wow wonderful work on shoe! i love this, i will try on my shoe.. thanks for your idea

  13. wow! these shoes are looking so beautiful and i really like you creativity. Amazing DIY guide you shared to design it.

  14. Brittini Serial

Hi I was wondering if you had any ideas for cracking glittered shoes? How can I prevent the shoe from cracking after glittering?

    • Hi Brittini,
The Mod Podge is pretty flexible, but you’ll want to make sure you don’t have any loose edges that might peel off. You could always add a light coat of Mod Podge over the glitter once they are dry to help to seal it and check them regularly for cracking or peeling.

      Cathy

  15. OH my god!!!!….. this looking so beautiful. DIY I am a big fan of you this all creativity is so unique and nice.
