Tiara Craft DIY
I was inspired to make this Pink Glitter Tiara for my daughter’s 4th birthday, shes obsessed with all things princess (and zombies but that will be for another post). This is such a simple project if you have time you could even make one for each of your guests.

CLICK HERE to get started with step by step instructions!

What youll need to make your Tiara:

  1. Lace – measure youre head and cut to size with a little extra to overlap
  2. 3/4 cup sugar – white granulated
  3. 1/4 cup water
  4. Glitter
  5. Glue

To make the sugar starch:

Mix the sugar and water in a sauce pan over low heat on the stove, stirring often until the sugar is no longer grainy and the mixture is smooth.

Its important you dont let it boil, you dont want the sugar to brown.
Let it cool a little.

You need to get your lace wet and pat dry, it must be damp before you put it in the sugar mixture.

Place your lace in the sugar mixture and mix it around to make sure it gets completely saturated.
Remove from the mixture and squeeze out any extra.

Smooth out your lace on a paper towel or wax paper.
Sprinkle with glitter

Wrap your lace around a bowl or round object to dry. This will take a couple hours.

When your lace is mostly dry, take it off the bowl and glue the ends together and let completely dry.

Once its completely dry your tiara is ready to be worn!

  1. This might be a dumb question but does it feel sticky? I’ve never used sugar starch before.

My daughters will love these they are beautiful

    • I was concerned about the sticky too, but once it’s completely dry it’s not sticky at all.
Let me know how yours turn out.

  2. Thanks for the idea, will it work on other fabrics such as ribbons?

    • Thanks Ann!
I’ve never tried it on ribbons. It should stiffen them, my only concern would be discoloring them.
But it would definitely be worth a try, just test a small piece first. Let me know how it goes.

  3. Does sugar starch wash out if it gets wet? I would assume so, but figured I’d ask.

    • Hi Kristy,
I haven’t gotten it wet, but I would assume so too.

  4. I was wondering if i could use fabric stiffener instead of the sugar mix?

  5. I finished mine about an hour ago, but doesn’t seem to be stiffening… how long does it take to dry? It looks beautiful by the way…. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Hey! I love these crowns and I want to do them for Princess Summer camp, what kind of lace did you use and where did you get it? :)

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Sam,
OMG Princess Summer camp! I want to go! That will be so cute! :) I bought the lace at JoAnn’s, I just found the tallest heaviest lace they had at the time. A thicker lace will be more sturdy, but the sugar really holds up well for most laces. My daughter still wears the one I made. :)

  7. Hi,
I know this is an old post, but I was wondering if I could paint the lace after it stiffens or would the paint make it soft again?
    Thanks!

    • Hi MaryAnn,
As long as you don’t use a lot of water with your paint I think it should be fine. I would recommend you use acrylic paint or something similar with minimal water. Let me know how it turns out. I’d love to see it!

  8. Why can’t you use some other form of starch besides using sugar? Just asking and does it leave the lace stiff enough or if they accidentally drop (or step on) does it then lose all shape?
Thank you it is very beautiful!

    • Hi Jill,
Yes, you could use another type of starch. I used the sugar starch because I wanted to make my own and also to see how it worked. As far as it holding it’s shape, it does hold very well. My daughter played with it and wore it a lot and I was really surprised at how well it held up. I don’t know about stepping on it, but there were times she put it in the toy box or a bag and it still looked like a tiara when it came out.
      Thanks!

  10. This method brings back fond memories. My older cousins we crochet doilies/doll dresses/booties for souvenirs’ at a baby shower among other items and make this sugar mixture . I just finished crocheting a Tiara for my grand daughter’s 3rd birthday and have been wondering how to make it stiff. Now I know but it may be too late since I used worsted yarn. Do you think I still can? Thank you so very much for the memories ! Ev

Hello Cathy – So excited to find your glitter crown with instructions. We are hosting a Cinderella Ballerina Ball -for 40 seriously little girls on July 18, 2016. We have ordered Cluny 4″ lace to make them each a crown. This is great to find the natural stiffner with their health needs. Any guidance you can give would be greatly appreciated.
